KILDEER PLOVER . Above , grayish - brown ; rump , chestnut ; forehead , beneath and neck collar , white ; band above forehead , neck collar and crescent on throat , black . Length , 9 – 10 inches . Occasional , by the Connecticut , but very rare in Amherst .
