HOUSE WREN . Above , brown ; beneath , grayish - brown ; waved everywhere with a darker shade . Length , 5 inches . Uncommon summer resident . Earliest arrival , April 5th ; departs in September . Raises 2 broods . Eggs 4 - 8 , almost fawn color . Nest of twigs and rubbish in holes in trees or bird - houses . Eggs laid in May or June . Feeds on insects . Beneficial . Said to be a pleasant singer .
